The 40th Yr Class Reunion - April 13 - 15 '07

30 April 07

Dear all,

nice updated pic gallery, Toti. for this and the revised VCD which we viewed yesterday - (which many of you will receive sooner or later).. thanks for the nice, well thought-of, compilation and presentation.

Of course these would not be possible if not for Ryan (Rudy's "bunso ") who was the untiring, dedicated photographer during the entire affair at Daet, (on top of being Rudy's full-time driver..) Thanks, Ryan, Rudy..

lagot ka sa disclaimer mo, Toti,-- "yong mga pic na di nyo gusto, baka yon talaga ang kamukha nyo".. ha..ha..ha..! ang lupeet, toti ..

kung baga sa golf, it sounds like, .. if we play 86 we should be thankful sa tsamba.. if we play 96 or higher, don't complain, yun talaga and natural! ha..ha..ha..! grabe..di ba, Danny?

- -
but seriously, the whole pic gallery makes me "revisit" that memorable affair. so i asked myself, for the record, what or which could be the highlights / sidelights of the occasion?

my views:

highlights:

1) the welcome dinner. First encounter after 40 years ! the hiiiiis and the helllooos were full of "ohhs' and aaahs. "oyyyy, kumusta..??!!" .."ikaw ba yan??? "ako nga, eto!!" either "ibang-iba ka na..! or "di ka nagbago!!".. excitement was on the high..

2) the lunch at Louise's . first time to really sit down calmly, up-close and personal. talk of the "now", plan for the "future". food was simple, but good.

3) the mass. the solemnity, the great words of wisdom and reminders from Rev. Sanchez. indeed "miracles happen everyday".. and "the fact that we're gathered here after 40 years..'' "..we have a lot to thank for.."

4) the saturday night affair..the climax. The best! specially, the video presentation, the group singing and dancing to those wonderful music. mixture of joy and nostalgia in reliving the past, shedding a tear or two, holding hands, enjoying the company of each other once more !.

5) Sunday noon at Dorset's residence.. I did not have chance to atttend this, so I can't say first hand. but from what I heard, this was a helluva send-off lunch. the food, the dessert, the angko's - were just terrfic.! Didn't you notice there were no pictures taken?? Well, it was because everyone, (including Ryan apparently, he..he..) was busy with the jumbo shrimps, alimango's and the lechons. Even Rory completely ignored doctor's orders! While Pacquiao was busy battling Solis, everybody was busy devouring the Sugpo's!

Sidelights –

1) teddy ong not only is still into music, despite being a dep ed coach. he actually formed the band which dra. yoly hired, and he's active with the group. most of all we should credit boboy for being our successful searcher / locator.

2) yes, joe chavez still croons. and this time with much feeling.. maybe the longings of the past, the hardhips of the present.. and the uncertainty of what's left of the future - altogether reflect the pains in his voice and stares in his eyes as he belts out that masterpiece.

3) estring asis still has that permanent quiet smile, and pensive aura.. (like a sister logical !).

4) efren mago works as municipal agriculturist and has been into farming over these years, but still can cope up with susan king's recital of the kilometric definitions of "history" and "state" - idnani versions. how're those again, susan ? hope you took note what the new word "triumpho" means..and the "causal relationships, if any.."

5) tess cereno was a revelation. nice and funny speech, tess, which bewildered many, and kept the others giggling..

6) fechie's speech was reassuring. made us feel good that our classmates/ friends in far away America/ Canada fondly remembers, and are one with us in heart and spirit. it was also a joy to hear her "American twang" - as sweet and inspiring as Hershey's chocolates-with-almonds after a meal.

(hi fech, hope you had a nice flight home..thanks for the treat yesterday --/inunahan mo kami/---
and hope you log-in soon..)

i know we have said and agreed before, and therefore no need to repeat - that it was a totally successful, unforgettable affair.

our common thoughts will now be centered on how to make forthcoming reunions to be even better. as they always say, no matter how good, there's always room for improvement..and no harm if we start thinking, conceptualizing as early as now.

cheers and warm regards,
Bert

To All my wonderful and great classmates,

I'm glad I'm finally back to SF after 2 extreme events during my visit. But first, my apology for the delay in this communique. To some of you from US, Canada, Norway, Manila, Naga and even Daet, who missed the event for one reason or another, I'm sure you're eager to hear all about the details of the Ruby Reunion.

Let me tell you first that I too was eager to relay the "happenings". Despite my exasperation and fatigue from the travels, I stayed up til wee hours right after I got in from the airport composing the message to send to you. Plus I also had to download the last few photos taken during my despedida at Mall of Asia, courtesy of the manila group. Unfortunately, after a lenghty letter and 5 photos and just right before I had to hit the "send button", my laptop acted up and I lost the file. I was so dissapointed and mad at myself! Toti, helppppp! kung malapit ka lang I could have used your expertise. Anyway, here I am again and hopefully no disaster will bar my effort.

Thank you guys for all the condolences, prayers, and the beautiful wreath you sent my way. No matter how much you think one is emotionally and psychologically prepared, it still hurts when the moment comes that you lose a loved one. But knowing that I had caring and compassionate friends around, it gave me strenght during my grief. Again, thanks to all who sent me text messages, emailed me and even called me on the phone. Even Marynat and Mona de Jesus L., who were absent during the reunion extended thier sympathy. My family says thank you too. What can I say, you guys are simply magnificent and great to belong!!!!

Here's my recap of the reunion:

Friday evening-a nice sumptuous reception was held at the Kusina ni Angel in Bagasbas. Lots of hellos, kumustahan, hagikhikan and pleasant surprises. For the first time since graduation, I met Bert P. along with his beautiful wife(Marie) and nephew Bruce. Lalong gumwapo si Bert with a true demeanor of a CEO; Alot remains gorgeous just a little healthier; Amelita Adem and Joe Marie Chavez, I almost didn't recognized them. Yung iba, I've seen them at some earlier times. I was psyched to stay up til AM but the night ended for the ladies at about 10pm. I think the guys wanted us to take a long beauty rest in preparation for the motorcade. Para daa it will not be too obvious na mga gurang na ang maparada!

Saturday started with the motorcade from Gahonon to DPS and then to Louie's Canteen. The participating vehicles were decked with balloons but due to the hot weather, they all burst even before the parade terminated. They made sure there were police escorts. Baka daa sabihon na ang mga gurang na ini nagwawarala sa tinampo! The "getting to know you more" continued during lunch and had brief brainstorming for a possible tangible project for the group. I don't think we came up with anything definite, right Rudy and Toti? After lunch, we unanimously agreed to visit Ms. Lunario (nee Sequi) instead of doing it on Sunday. Ms. Lunario was quite surprised with the visit. Except for being freshly manicured and pedicured, she said she was not ready and was quite embarrassed. We all reassured her that it didn't matter to us. Rudy was very proud to introduce her to his wife, Evelyn and son,Ryan. Btw, Rudy, your family are good looking and good sports. He said she made a significant difference in his direction and his life overall. After about 3 hrs. of respite, we reconvened at the parish church of Fr. Efren for the mass. His homily was so appropriate. he gently reminded us that we had alot to be thankful for-one, that we had this wonderful gathering after 40 years of being estranged at one time or another. Then we had the Socials at MT 2. The combination of the nice camaraderie, the food, the video presentation, the sharing, the music, the dancing and the group singing filled the room and joy ( tears sometimes) exudes in everyone. Toti, your video presentation was fantastic! I'm sure you had put in tons of hours putting them together. You''re the man! Gifts were ptresented to Ms. Segui and Zano, our former teachers. It was a nice surprise knowing that Annabelle and Tess C. are into ballroom dancing just like I enjoy it much. Some of the guys commentetd that kaito daa, dai maranihan o madutdutan ining mga girls na ini. Pero now, mga nagpapakarga pa sa mga DI's. By the way, thanks Annabelle for arranging the DI's. I must have lost several pounds shaking those booties! The band c/o Yoly played nostalgic music of the 60's and 70's. We all wanted to stay much longer but the management declined despite Mendy's willingness to pay more. Too bad!

Sunday-we gathered at Dorset's place in BAgasbas for lunch. Everyone got overwhelmed with the superb gustatory delights that were contributed by our generous classmates. As you notice, no one thought of taking pictures. But the crabs, the lechon, sugpo, pinangat, angko, salmon and etc were just super-delicious! Thanks to Dorset, Manny, Remo, Alot, Mendy, Joe Marie, Yoly and others who put his luncheon together. Talagang walang sawang tsibogan and chikahan. In fact, Rory forgot that he had to watch his diet! It was kinda getting sad towards the end as each one is heading back to their home places. In fact, Boboy had to leave early. May meeting daw-(hindi kaya mating?) It was an endless goodbyes. A few of us left in Daet (Annabelle, Yoly, Mila, Emily and myself)proceeded to Melit's little resort in Laniton where we enjoyed a brief boat ride and merienda sa gitna ng ilog. We were not really ready to call it quits, later on we proceeded to our house for wine, dinner and karaoke. It was almost 10pm when we ended.

The entire weekend was fabulous! It was well worth my trip. The fun, laughters and the giggles were constant. To those who were absent, you have missed a lot-another special chapter in our lives. So better plan for the next one now! It will be on Feb. 7-8, 2009. US-based classmates, pls take note. No more excuses. Assignment ko kayo, so we better make good at the next.

To all the core group who made this event possible and very successful, saludo ako! Special kudos goes to Mendy, Susan, Yoly, Boboy, Toti( our very dedicated techno wiz), Alot, Ed and sorry po if I forgot to mention someone.

Oh by the way, I felt dissapointed not seeing Ed C. and Baby/Nemia B. at the reunion. But Baby, you made up for it by showing up at the merienda last Sunday. Sooo happy to see you again. You are still gorgeous!

For those kindhearted who joined us for merienda in Manila- I enjoyed the get together up to the last minute. Thanks to Alot, Yoly, Baby, Tess and son, Lina and daughter, Rory, Bert and MArie, Toti (sorry Toti you had to work on the CD's under time pressure)and Evelyn (Rudy's wife).

I think this message is getting too long and before my pc crashes on me again, I better sign off. I'll send the photos of the Manila despedida at next mail.

Men, Marybeth, Herminia and Violeta, may padala si Alot and Tess C. sa inyo. I also have the CDs of the reunion.I'll mail it asap or if you guys are heading my way, I'll be glad to see you and hand it to you.

Bert- you continue to impress me with your editorial prowess. Galing talaga! I loved your last message addressing class personalities and highlights. Wow!!!!

Let us all continue this wonderful camaraderie and connections as we age. I look forward to hearing from you always and I'll do the same. We are the envy of lots of Parochialites or LCC alumni because we often have reunions. Let's even get them more jealous in 2 years with greater participation and attendance.

Hugs and kisses,
Fechie

Here's some photos attached. Pardon the titles.

Toti-can you revise it to just say DPS '67 pics?

Thanks.

Hello Toti, Dan, Bert and all the others who are so fortunate to read these e-mail Exchanges....

Many thanks for all the goodies...chichats and fotos (which actually launched more chitchats and questions and therefore fuel our needs to see and eventually hug one another). Toti, you have made the fotos very internet friendly. I just loved small fotos. I guess our e-group home will be so happy with these fotos...I also love the ways you took the fotos...cool action shots---gee you all really enjoyed it, even if Rudy was totally beerless (I couldn't confirm this from the e-mails I just saw).

Reunion '07--
to the rest of the group who didn't make it last Sat.-Sun, i wouldn't repeat saying "you missed a lot". You already knew it, and YOU DID !

Attendance (and seeing/ chatting with everyone) was great!

organization was excellent, schedules were met as planned, and Sat. night affair was overwhelming! Music of the band was perfect for the occasion.

Even my wife was so touched she shed tears at least twice Sat. night. She said it was a mixed feeling of joy and nostalgia during the video presentation (she never saw or knew some of the faces shown but she could feel what everbody felt.) She was also thrilled no end everytime the boys approached the girls to dance to the music of the Lettermen and the Beatles - just the way they were 40 years or more ago..! Mabenta pa rin sa sayaw and mga girls! he..he.. Gaganda pa rin kasi!

Congrats and lots of thanks to the Daet Group for a job well done and to Toti's warm, personal touch (with Ed's help, i understand) on the vcd !

Totally charmed,
Bert

Hi Toti,

I have seen all the pictures you sent so far - what a reunion! Kudos to the Daet group who planned the affair. They did a great job. I'm sure with almost two years notice of the next reunion, those of us who were not able to attend this year, will have no reason not to attend unless barred by physical limitations. I for one will be looking forward for that eventful 2009 reunion. I told Ed, if I can buy the ticket now, I will but of course it's too early yet. About Marynat, when you talk to her, please extend my regards to her. Tell her it's coming from her "kinakapatid". She is my Ate Marynat, you know.

Toti - thanks for everything you're doing to keep our batch's line of communication open. Once again, we are feeling very young at heart because of all the memories coming back to us due to this this newly found closeness among friends of yesteryears. Getting emotional here, but that's how it is
with us right now.

Regards and as Ed will end it, hugsssssssssss and hugsssssss again

Hi Bert,

You are right. Those of us who did not make it, missed a lot. Just looking at all the pictures, you were all having a grand time. Us here? We were like "manganganak" waiting for the baby to be delivered. Ask Men, every now and then we will ask, any news from Daet. I don't even want to go to bed early because I don't want to miss the skype chatting that was planned but unfortunately did not happen due to technical impossibility which we understood perfectly. 2009 will be different though, I WILL BE THERE... will play golf too. Regards.

Hi guys,

Yeah, Danny and I were expecting calls from somebody who never called. Like Insan said we were like waiting for somebody na nanganganak. Unfortunately, technically, that wasn't possible. We may not be there physically, but we were there in thoughts (hate the word spiritually) di ba, Insan? Anyway, everybody had a wonderful, unforgettable affair. Hope we can do it again sooner. Lots of hugs to all.

Dear Classmates who were not able to attend our Reunion,

We are really sorry, we could not make the planned teleconferencing via Skype a reality. First disappointment was when I tried to log into my internet account but could not. I later found out that Globe Telecom has no Wireless broadband in Daet. Thus, my Globe Visibility USB was of no use. Second, was when Rory and I tried to arrange with the internet cafe that was nearest to the venue of the dinner-socials to install the internet in the venue. We were told however, this was not possible. That it was tried before but was not successful.

And so what happened was that several of you had to call us up and we had to pass on the phone to the others. That must have been expensive for you.

Just arrived about an hour or so ago. I hitched a ride with Tess, together with Alot. I'd like to tell you that the event was very successful. Around 27 were able to attend. We certainly missed you. In order to allow more time for you to prepare and make arrangements for your trip to the Philippines, the group decided to set a date for our next reunion. This will be on February 6 to 8, 2009.

I'll send some pictures (there are too many, you'll have to wait for the CDs to see all of them). More news too, tomorrow. I'm too sleepy now to continue.

Bye for now til tomorrow

PATIKIM lang ito.

I had to resize the pictures. I'm afraid the earlier post would bounce back. rudy's camera is so good, very high resolution but each pic has a size of more than 2 MB.

danny and ed,

the pictures taken in the rizal monument are dedicated to you. You were the ones who suggested that we pay homage to our hero. wala lang nga wreath. don't worry also that the picture does not show the entire monument baka kung saang tabi lang kinuha. There's a full shot showing all of us with the entire monument shown. this was taken by the professional photographer, although it's not digital. I ordered a copy and I'll have it scanned.

toti (reviewing the messages now, bert was also one of those who suggested the rizal monument visit).

wow irma, nagbago nga raw ako. hindi makapaniwala si maning abogado na tatangkad pa pala ako. what they remember of me is being one of the smallest guys, together with bert. Buti na lang pala kahit matanda na e nagpacircum____ pa ako ano? kaya nakahabol. haha! joke lang.

oo namiss mo talaga kami. napa-wow din sila sa pictures mo when I showed the vcd of our old and current pictures.

you should start preparing for the 2009 Reunion.

Due to the very good work of our Daet group, they have been retained as the officers. there was no formal election. Rudy moved for their retention - Susan, Mendy, Yoly, Remo, Jebong (Zano), Dorset, and Boboy.

We are really very grateful to this very hard working group who really did all their best to make the event successful. Dyahe na nga, grabe ang pagod nila. Aside from a Welcome Dinner on Friday, there was a very sumptuous lunch at Dorset's residence in Bagasbas before we left. May litson, sugpo, alimango, tinumok, pinangat, isda, lumpia, ano pa ba.... for kakanin - angko, hinalo, sarap!!! meron pang pinya and pakwan. o inggit ba kayo. Grabe, sira ang diet nuong iba, although, i think wala naman talagang nagdi-diet sa atin ano. Even Rory Serra - hindi maawat sa litson, alimango at aligue.

Hope that in 2009, we can have several committees working para di naman ilang tao lang ang pagod na pagod.

Fechie has been named as the coordinator of our US-based classmates. baka pwede ka rin irma for the Canada-based classmates. I was assigned as the overall coordinator - that means facilitating communications among the differrent groups. Actually mas high tech si Ed but he has a lot of limitations in terms of time since he has a lot of commitments. Ganuon talaga pag pang-international ang talent.

makigaya na rin ako - hugs to everyone!

Cheers to all!

dear all,

goes without saying of course while kudos are due to the fantastic whole Daet group, the event would not have been that successful without the help and cooperation of our foreign-based classmates.. even though they missed physically being there (for valid reasons), we know their hearts were longing to be there, and their thoughts, wishes -plus of course the generosity-contributed to the big success.
special commendation is due to Fechie who flew the thousand miles and made it despite her hectic schedules. she ably represented the U.S. group !

cheers,
Bert

Daet Parochial School Class 67 said...

yes i agree bert. In fact, we should have given an award to fechie for traveling such distance to be with the group.

thanks too to the foreign-based classmates who gave their support, although physically they were not able to attend.

By the way, Mendy reported that the total amount collected was P91 thousand, which is quite big. Not everything was spent for the celebration. Some amount was donated to the school. Likewise, there's a plan to help one of our classmates, who's in need. I'm sure after things have settled, Mendy will be able to give a financial report so we will know how much is available and thus allow us to make realistic recommendations on what to do with it.

We all deserve some congratulations!

Just wanted to inform you that what made it possible to show the video on big screen was Rory Serra's effort to bring the LCD projector and DVD player, including the power cords, adopters,, and numerous CDs and DVDs of music circa 60s and 70s. And it was unfortunate that he was not able to hitch a ride with Tess, Bert or Rudy and the Philtranco bus he rode got busted even before reaching Calamba. It was already past 12 noon when their bus was able to leave Calamba. We were already in Atimonan, Quezon by that time (Alot, Lina and I rode with Tess, and with us on convoy was
Bert and his family. Rudy, Evelyn and son Ryan, travelled much earlier than us. ). Double whammy, Rory left his eyeglasses in Sariaya, Quezon. (Going back to Manila, he already rode with Rudy.)

------

Was it Men asking for the address of Mrs. Felipa S. Lunario? It's Barangay Burabod, Daet, Camarines Norte. If you have forgotten, Burabod is a barangay on the way to Bagasbas beach. It's former name
is ANGHIT! hmmm. bango!

------

Rudy is a natural-born leader. This was obvious during the reunion, when he led and facilitated discussions during the luncheon meeting. Pag si Rudy na ang nagsalita, all of us listened. Pero may comedy rin.... while paying tribute to the two former teachers who attended the reunion - Ms. Segui-Lunario and Mrs. Zano, Rudy said that he owes his improved English to our teacher, Mrs. Zano. Somebody shouted, "Rudy, Pilipino teacher natin si Mrs. Zano!" Biglang kambyo si Rudy,
kaya nga ba hindi masyadong nag-improve iyong English ko e! It was Boboy Ong's fault. Si Boboy ang nagsabing English teacher si Mrs. Zano.

----

No one remembered to take pictures of the last event of the Reunion - the lunch at Dorset's residence in Bagasbas. Perhaps everyone got distracted by the food (puro pampabata) and the Manny Pacman Pacquiao fight, or nakatago na iyong mga camera.

---

Alot, Lina and I enjoyed the ride with Tess, who drove all the way from Manila to Daet, then on Sunday, from Daet to Manila. There was just one rule we had to abide - "Bawal matulog!" You can use toothpick to keep your eyes wide open, box or pinch yourself, basta bawal matulog. I was sitted in front, beside Tess, so I had to keep myself awake, even if I hardly had any sleep before the trip to Daet. But Lina and her beautiful daughter Princess, who were sitted at the back with Alot were successful sa "pagnanakaw ng tulog". So we had to keep ourselves awake by recalling funny anecdotes. You can ask Alot, marami din akong na-contribute.

---

Si Bert magulang. It was Marie who was driving most of the time, while he kept on texting us!

----

You should hear Susan and Efren Mago, doing a duet...... duet in reciting the definition of History, in the exact words taught by Mr. Idnani! Not content, Efren further recited the long definition of “STATE”! What about you? Do you still recall these?
K, these are unorganized recollections of the reunion. I have to go back to work. It's 1:31 AM here.

Integrating the video (lcd & dvd), the computer, and the sound system at the place (which we did'nt know what to expect when we left Manila- that I had to bring all possible adapters/ connectors) contributed in making the affair a success. One failure was the plan to hook up the event to the internet(via skype or YM) which would have been nice for the US-Canada group to watch it 'live'. I could have debated with the technician in place or even quarreled with the 'just woken-up' guy but decided to be sober, kailangan natin si Boy Rios o si Boboy to do a 'Virginia Massacre', Joke lang. Anyway thanks guys for making me contribute something to making the affair a success, and to you partner Toti it was nice working with you. Cheers
GBU All.

Toti,

Another piece of trivia was that since I left my eyeglasses in Sariaya, Quezon, I had a blurred vision upon reaching Daet and in order not to ruin my enjoyment, of seeing my beautiful classmates again, I had one made within one hour in Daet in time for the motorcade with the help of Judge Winston Racoma, RTC Daet, my host. And alas!, I was able to retrieve it back on our way home to Manila last Sunday. So I have now two sets of glasses. Praise God!

Thanks

Yes, I remember now, Rory. On our trip back to Manila, Rudy called. He was trying to fool me that you changed your mind and decided not to hitch a ride with you. Instead, Rudy said you were going to ride with us! But we were already in Quezon at that time and you were not with us. So that got us worried thinking that you were again taking a bus ride alone back to Manila. Then I heard you laughing on the background. So I knew you were with them. Rudy did say that you'll check with the restaurant where you ate if they found and kept your eyeglasses. And so they did. Good thing!

Hello everybody. This is Marybeth with my weekly response to messages I read.

Well put Bert. As usual a great summary of the 3 day event with details. I could actually taste the sugpo and feel the beat of the band and hear Chavez crooning away. I already had my chance with Boboy taking me back to the 60's with his songs in Bagasbas lasr January. But reading your email made it almost tangible.
Nakaka miss at nakaka ingit talaga.

Once again, your have given us a snapshot of some our classmates. Great captions to accompany the photos.

Thanks Rudy and Ryan for the pictures. Without them, it would be hard to imagine those we have not seen for 40 years. The photos just makes me more determined to NOT miss the next one. Rudy, you have great looking boys, a lovely wife and a gorgeous daughter. I have to say she took after the Mom.

To the Daet group, a job well done as usual. You are the core of all these celebrations. You have kept the torch flame burning for all of us prodigal sons and daughters.

And to our internet savvy group, a big thank you for bringing us in touch with each other once again.

Can't wait to hear from Fetchie. I'll give her time to recover before I call her up and get more details and the VCD.

Regards to all from Benicia California

Wow, another well-written piece from Bert (posted April 30 in this thread)! If only we already have the blog, this will be the main feature. Keep on writing Bert, I'm sure everyone loves reading your work. I hope Marybeth too writes about something, maybe about life there in the US of A. Even just her responses to the messages posted, are a joy to read. I'll continue hoping that she'll have the time to write!
