Mr. World: Our International Development Expert

This is an article quoting Ed Canela's views about Indonesia/Indonesians published in an Indonesian Newspaper.

March 27

Dear Ed,

You've gone a long way Eddie! You probably have the most intellectually challenging job among us all, and indeed challenging because you have the potential of influencing the development directions of these countries. I'm confident that you're doing your best to help eradicate global poverty.

I remember you as the science whiz kid, who's a conductor of electricity, lighting up the fluorescent bulb you were holding in your hand, to our bewilderment. Ms. Bermillo must have had a difficult time trying to act smarter than you!

I'm sorry to hear that your mother has passed away. She knew me very well. She always greeted me whenever I passed by your shop along J. Lukban Street. That was more than 40 years ago.

You look very well, very "prosperous" in your picture with Angel Racoma. Hope to see you in person. Yesterday, we just had a mini-reunion with Rudy Surla as the center of the get-together, not having seen him for the past 40 years. The group included Susan, Alot, Nemia/ Baby, Bert Padrigon, Roderic Serra, and Rudy's wife. Rudy treated us to lunch. Maybe, next time, you can be the sponsor, huh?

Best regards,

Toti

Hi Toti and DPS 67

Many thanks for the fotos...I was in the US last year and had a chance to chat with Joe Sales, Myrna and Marybeth. Wonderful feelings I tell you...talagang iba pag maraming taon na ang nakaraan. I have been blessed, very blessed indeed. I have already visited more than 75 countries and still travelling. I am still working as consultant to countries (governments) and donor agencies (World Bank, ADB, AID, United Nations, etc.) on matters pertaining to economy, development, employment, etc. despite the fact that am an engineer by profession...ang layo talaga. Heto nga. Most of my work are outside the country and I really avoid doing business here except when I was with the Department of Trade and Industry (during Vicente Paterno and GMA's time). I still could not commit (despite my urgent wanting) to see you all in April, I am committed to two difficult clients: Governments of Palestine and Montenegro. In my previous visits to Daet, I have met many people; Imelda and Yolanda attended my Mother's funeral. Ramona helped me with parent's bank accounts. Have met also Anggi Racoma (hope you still remember him) and he gave me the tel number of Edgar Tamayo, a pilot and Glianila\'s younger Brother. I have once visited Arce here in Manila before when she had cancer. Rudy Surla looked very fine and prosperous...he, he, he. I will also send you fotos when I can. Perhaps we can now load some of these fotos to the site, ha???? Hugsssss to all.

Hi Toti,

Tsamba...Yes, my mother remembers you always. And someone else who was always with you then...remember her? Wow, we still remember T. She too was a close friend of my Mom and for sometime, we have been meeting here in Manila pero I lost her numbers now. Well, tsamba lang iyan...have always dreamed of visiting many countries and learn from them even when we were in the elementary days. Couldn't believe that I would really be able to travel as much as I did. I now have three kids. Oldest is 30, in telecoms (Australian firm) in Manila and is happily married with one kid (my grandson of 1), a daughter (29) who is a medical doctor in Virginia, and another one (19) who is third year in UP Film and Communications wanting to be a film director. My wife is happily retired, a CPA who still maintains 3 or 4 clients. I still maintain my technical interest...I am still very savvy on the use (and abuse) of laptops and internet. I also double as web-designer, e-learning programming and like digital photography. These interests make feel younger and keep me going for new technical developments. I also sit on two or three NGO boards dealing with fair trade and entrepreneurship development. Walang problema ang dinner or lunch....my problem is time. I might know at some stage whether I could shift some planned schedules in Palestine and Montenegro (sana naman?). Hugssssss Toti.

Hi Eddie Boy,

This is Danny. Reading all the things you are doing now and have accomplished, I'm not surprised. From the time you brought that pail of coconut milk(? )to our science class (akala namin "sagmaw") and then winning the science contest in Manila, I knew my classmate by the name of Ed Canela would go places. And look where you are now. Anyway, knowing now that you have a daughter in Virginia, I assume that every now and then you visit her.

How about informing me when you will be in the States, in that way if we can't meet personally, at least we can talk by phone. Virginia is only a good 9 hours drive from Orlando. My cell phone number is (407) 538-1479 and my e-mail is DDELAFUENTE@cfl.rr.com. Do you have Angel Racoma's e-mail address? Just like you, I'm trying hard to free up my schedule to attend our Reunion, but since I came back from my vacation last March 6, my commitments keep on piling up. Regards to you and your family.

Marybeth Regalario bautista: Wbauti1053@aol.com

Ang ganda Toti....my journey down the memory lane lasted 2 hours....my congratulations for a job well done. And I love the fotos...I am still battling for a chance to see you all. I also called Danny Dela F...F..he, he at about midnight our time, he was in his house in Orlando, FL. He got shocked and was happy we had a chat. I use a VoIP phone to call free to anywhere pero less than 5 min per call. Ang saya! Could really be so nice if we all can be reunited....Anyhow am already happy that we at least have a site and we can deposit some of our nice fotos of yesteryears....Hugsssss

Oh, you are in Manila so why not we try and meet???? I am frequently in ADB when I am in town. Lunch or dinner?

Dear Ed,

It was so nice to have finally heard from you again. You got me worried, after all the weekly emails we had and suddenly you stopped. Think the last time I heard from from you was the first week of February, when I informed you about the forthcoming reunion in April. Anyway, welcome back. Please accept my heartfelt condolence, late as it may be.

You know what, I have always admired you ever since you got accelerated to Grade III,
I knew then that you would be somebody someday and I was right. Like Danny, I also thought that the pail you brought to class was "sagmaw"and look where that "sagmaw brought you. A national award - what an honor! I have always believed in you and so proud of you. I am sure all our classmates are. Remember the script you did in First Year? I still have the original copy you gave for me to narrate, it was 'THE DREAMERS WORLD". Even then you were talking about working with the United Nations - and look where you are now. You're living your dream, so to speak. You are really, truly blessed! I salute you my good friend.

Hugs,

THE REUNION WITH ED AT CRUSTASIA IN ROCKWELL, MAKATI CITY

mar 27

Hi All,

I tell you, I'm so proud and very honored indeed to have belong to what sounds like a very prosperous group of individuals. Kudos to all of us! Despite our silliness, playfulness and innocence during those years (i.e. 40 years ago), look at us now. I'm sure all of our teachers esp. the late Mr. Idnani must be likewise be very proud of us.

Ed- not only were you an inventor but an adventurer as well. Goodness, I don't thiink any one can top the number of countries you've been to. So, aside from all the traveling you do, how have you been? I have not seen you since we graduated from DPS. I wish you can make it to the reunion. I am doing my best to not miss this big event even if it cost my job. This might not be followed with anymore at the rate we're going.

Toti, Rudy et al- delighted to hear that you were able to gather again. I'm sure the Capt. had a lot to fill you in after his visit here with us in SF. The photos were great too!

What is happening among us these days is really fantastic. Imagine that, with just a click of the mouse and we are connected despite distance. Thank you again Toti and the e-technology that this is all possible. I look forward to reading messages and viewing the photos everyday.

Best regards to all.

I was in a whole day workshop at the Dept of Social Welfare & Development yesterday. I'm also into consultancy work in the area of social development. Right now, I'm a member of the project preparation team for a new anti-poverty program called 'Conditional Cash Transfer' that will be tried out in the Philippines. The World Bank provided a grant for project prep but expects that another loan will be negotiated for its implementation. Previously I was also involved in another World Bank-funded project for DSWD – the Kalahi-CIDSS. I did the financial management system at the community
level. I'm also doing the funds flow, as well as training for this new project. Small time lang, instead of countries, its villages/barangays in various regions that i go to. These are short-term consultancies. So I have to be on the look out for new assignments, since I'm not attached to any consultancy firm.

I'll call you up this morning. If you go to ADB often, we can probably meet somewhere in Ortigas Center. I stay in Mandaluyong. I can get a whole day pass, I just have to ensure that I'm back on the
time. (sa loob kasi ng mandaluyong). Just kidding.

Poverty alleviation is one of the most intractable development issue despite the abundance in the world. Yes, let us get together and see connect the pieces that we both left behind unconnected. Can we try and do it on Friday, we can meet at the Podium or somewhere close to ADB at around 5:30 pm? Please try and call me again.

I hope you get to read this today! I've been trying to contact you in the number you posted here, but there's an error message.

Rudy and Rory can make it if we meet this afternoon. Tomorrow, Rudy will already be leaving, while Rory will be going to Naga. Bert Padrigon is playng golf in Olongapo (Ok siya ano, weekday,
nag-rerelax), but probably it's business with pleasure since he's into the stock market.

Rory can not use his car too (coding), so he suggests Makati. Baka okey yong Rockwell. Rudy will be coming from Paranaque.

Will you be available at 5:30 PM today?

Did I get your number right - 0920-920-1615?

well folks, here are the pictures.

MEN, please take note of the sign at the background - it says "Crustasia", aside from Asia, it suggests crustacean, which brings to mind - shrimps, crabs,... yes, seafood! we had in mind what you said, when we chose the place. (the pictures were taken too early, before food was brought in, so you can't see the seafoods.)

we (ed, rory and i) waited for the captain and his lady for an hour or so at the starbucks in Rockwell-Makati. It seemed that in his excitement, Rudy failed to read my text message in full, where I said
that not only was it okay for Ed to meet tonight instead of tomorrow, but that the venue was changed from Podium (in Ortigas) to Rockwell. So, off they went to Starbucks at Podium, while we were drowning ourselves with coffe at Starbucks in Rockwell. Well...., ed said it's OA (a case of old age)... he, he... rudy wasn't there yet when ed said this. Oh, well, don't worry Rudy, soon you'll forget what it was that you have forgotten!

as ed said, ang saya namin. I didn't know until tonight that rudy had this fetish for "ears" - ed's and manuel abogado's ears. He loved fondling them. He has overcome this though. Now, it's not the ears he loves fondling, and of course, not ed's or manuel's! (I don't know, if this is ok to share, baka batukan ako ni Rudy! Sori Capt, napagtripan ka lang tonight.)

We also had a chance to get serious though and talked about other relevant and important matters. Maybe, later, we too, will go beyond the kumustahan, the reminiscing. Those of us who have the chance to join the recent mini-reunions, all look happy and prosperous, and that's good. We're very fortunate, indeed. Maybe, as we anticipate the reunion, we can think of what we want to do us a group. We'll surely enjoy meeting "old" friends and classmates (mga lolo at lola na). Beyond that, do we want to do something more? just asking. (malay, nyo, baka gusto nyong magtayo ng home for the aged – palista na ako ha!) para, wag namang madrama ang ending nito.

Daet Parochial School Class 67 said...

Hi Toti,

What happened with Rudy actually happened to me during the time we were to meet in Makati. Pero iyong sa akin, hindi malayo. Baby told me that we will be meeting at Via Mare at Greenbelt 1. In my excitement, I only remembered Via Mare (OA perhaps). So came noontime, I was outside Via Mare and I still don't see Baby or you or Susan or Alot. I thought Iwas just early, but after15 minutes, I called Baby's cell phone and she asked me where am I, so I told her I was outside Via Mare besides Starbucks and she said she can't see me. Then when she asked me if I'm at Greebelt 1, that's when I came to know that I was actually outside Via Mare but in Greenbelt 3. Anyway, I had a great time afterwards. That's what too much excitement can do. Just sharing. Whatever serious matters you will be discussing and will be decided on pertaining to DPS Class '67, count me in. Regards.

Toti and others,

Gosh! sa pictures na lang you all look so prosperous, happy and successful. Buti na lang nasabit ako sa group na ito. You guys look fabulous!

Bert- you missed that mini-reunion with the Capt. et al but I hope to see you in Daet next month. Mabuti ka pa, pa golf-golf na lang! Be careful, baka iba ang ma-hit mo. He-he!

With all these recent mini-reunions happening here and there and everyone seem to enjoy the moments of recollection and reminiscence, I couldn't wait to see how the big reunion will be. I'm pretty sure that it will be the grandest reunion ever. So guys, don't miss this big event. Kayo din.

I was showing the photos from our egroup to Sylvia Villafuerte (remember her- class 1966 at DPS?She is also a nurse now. ), and she was so jealous. She was envious about our close bond and the attempts to get reunited even thru on-line. So let's keep on with this nice camaraderie. Again, thanks to Toti for initiating this and updating this.

Hugs to all.

Thanks Danny,

The mission to Indonesia is relatively big. Team members include myself (Team Leader) plus two German Experts (a Man called Dietmar and a lady called Gaby, both of whom works with the German Government) plus two Indonesians who will facilitate the Mission. We will be going around most of
the time discussing with local officials and sometimes conducting on-the-spot workshops and mini-conferences. It will be fun I tell you and I will not expect any dull moment. The rest will be report-writing and examining the actual conditions. These movements will prevent me from being all the time connected to the net. Hi Toti,

So sorry...am so much into coping with a tsunami of e-mails...and just got in to ADB this am...daming trabaho. Anyway, am learning to cope...Yes am going to Montenegro but only after three weeks in Central Java...Jogjakarta and Solo where I will join another team of Germans to expand Solo into a Soloraya much like transforming Manila into Metro Manila. Big undertakings there. Gee, you should see what is happening to Indonesia. Really incredible! Even Aceh, was a really a transformation...in less than 2 years...they learned a lot about speeding up developments as in China.

Montenegro is a new country. The State Union Serbia and Montenegro, was a confederated union of Serbia and Montenegro, which existed between 2003 and 2006. The two republics, both of which are former republics of the SFR Yugoslavia, initially formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. In 2003, the FRY was reconstituted as a State Union Serbia and Montenegro. On May 21, 2006, Montenegro held a referendum to seek full independence. It is the pearl of the Mediterranean, unique in many ways, and situated in the south of the Adriatic. There is nowhere else that you can find, in such a small place, so much natural wealth, beauty, mild beaches, clear lakes, fast rivers and gorgeous mountains - except in Montenegro. In the morning you can wake up along the beautiful Adriatic coast, have lunch on the banks of Skadar Lake, and enjoy the evening walks in the Montenegrin mountains. I attached two photos for your imagination.

Buti ka pa...malakas pa rin ang nationalism. Ako matagal ng nag-fade. I am waiting for our really small people to take the future of this country in their own hands and not to give it to those lousy politicians who are only good in the beginning of their terms. Signs today show how greedy everyone is...I would not be surprise if these guys will eventually earn the salary of the President of Singapore (who gets even bigger salary than the president of the US). But come on...what are these guys really up to?
Anyway, believe pa rin ako sa yo....travelling to Naga just to exercise your right...Galing Toti.

Will be off again on Saturday to Singapore and then to Central Java. Will come back to Manila for three days before flying off to Monte. Hugssssss.

Hello all,

Two nice fotos I took in Aceh...just to remind you of how strong the tsunami was. Boats got into the center of the capital Banda Aceh and stayed there permanently...One was a tug-boat with a full electric power plant that will permanently adorn the center of Aceh...Hugssssss.

Hi Toti,

Salamat sa e-mail mo...I am so happy that MaryNat is now out and that whilst I was not able to make it, I really prayed for her.

Heto busy na naman and preparing a lot of small small stuffs for our Central Java mission. I chatted with Rudy yesterday. Nandito siya and he is looking for some recent happenings. Sayang hindi ako makakatulong...in our work, we need to concentrate and deal with lots of info, alam mo naman yon....

Wow...you really have started a blog...wonderful. Ok yan Toti...Maybe when I retire I will help you write our small but nonetheless interesting "saga". Our e-group is still at its "Happiness" period, e.g., sharing of the happy moments we have in the past...but the real story of our saga will consist of Happiness and Sadness...Success and Failures. I do not believe that our group suffered the same stereotypical sadness that the babyboomers in the US had...I am sure we are very different! Let us wait till the happiness moment is over and then we will see the darker side...and if we get over this hump, then our group is on forever. I am with you all the way for the blogs, tell me if I could be of help (albeit from a distance). HUgssssss for now.

Congrats Ed for a successful mission. Will you still be pushing through with your Palestine trip after a brief stay in Manila? Isn't it dangerous there now, well, when was it really safe in the first place. But recently, puro bombahan na naman ang nasa news a. Why not skip it, this time?

Hi Toti,

So far we will proceed still...pag malapit na siguro maka-cancel ang mission if it proves very dangerous...so far, cool pa rin. The Mission will mostly be in Tel Aviv...with daily trips to Ramallah and Jericho...considered to be the lowest point on Earth...he, he, he am excited! Lots of hugsss and warm
regards to all.

Wow, interesting. My first time to learn about Jericho being the lowest point on earth. In case, you push through with your trip, don't forget to take pictures and send them to us! At least, para na din kaming sumama sa iyo!

Yes...Toti...I will first go to Monte for about ten days (they are crazy about this thing alled "Private Sector Ombudsperson") and as a good consultant, am happy to provide... he, he, he. Then I will proceed to Tel Aviv and move on from there. Heto, I might have to go to Laos after Ramallah... Imagine, I have to give up Morocco and France for Ramallah...I think am getting crazier every day. Huli rin kasing dumating eh! After Ramallah, I will possibly be back to Indonesia for another mission with the same project that am now in. I can definitely afford to take two trips to the US free... he, he, he. Siyanga pala, I got into Macromedia Adobe and now am trying the new Photoshop CS3 and Fireworks...Ganda P're. I want to move to a higher level like Maya and all that sort, pero steep ang learning curve. But will do as soon as I am a bit freer from all these travelling...HUgssssssss to all

I need to do some software compiling in Manila and become a bit visible in ADB as I have been absent for three weeks....I like Toti's advice to Rori...he, he, he... mahirap talaga Rori...Just live on day-to-day basis when dealing with your kids....Hugsssss

Just like Toti and Men, please accept my congratulations. I'm sure the Indonesian paper is all praises to you. At least we know that they were talking about you because we can read the name Eduardo Canela. Talagang talaga na malaking oras ka na (sabi ni Men - Big time ka na).

Hi guys,

ya, I second the motion. regional and global personality ka talaga, Ed. congrats n keep it up!

Last par:.."tapa ini masih dalam bahasa Inggris.." he..he..he.. jok jok lang Ed, wag masyado seryos sa Central java.

seriously now..
In the 90's, I used to visit Jakarta and Manado (Bitung) - every year. Manado (in Sulawesi) has same climate as Mindanao (and the towns there look similar to Davao too). it is Indonesia's coconut region. Bitung is where most of the oil mills are and they ship their Coconut Oil from there too, and then there are also the small islands of Luwuk and Libuo, where there are small plants as well. oftentimes it is a tiring travel, but to offset the whole ordeal I spend the weekend in Bali, and here, all the backaches disappear. The scenes on the beach are both relaxing and stimulating (if you know what I mean.. he..he..)

cheers n take good care,

Bert

Hello all,

Am in Bangkok Lounge now for the past four hours waiting for my flight to Vienna where I will stay for a day and then straight to Podgorica…Montenegro.I am so excited despite the difficulties for Filipinos to get there. Visa is required and I just got mine this am. Will inform you if all goes well…I like the challenge: Establishing the Ombuds Practice in Montenegro’s Private Sector….Pray for me! Then I will be in Jericho, ten min from Tel Aviv for ten days to do a training program for enterprise trainers using the method that I have co-developed for the Germans. The announcement is attached.

Huggsssssss

Dear Ed,

Have a safe trip! Your work is really exciting, bringing you to different places. I read the announcement about the Training you'll be conducting. Has GTZ done a TOT for that program in the
Philippines? Very few of the NGOs here who are good at community organizing and institutional development also have expertise in enterprise development. I hope you can tie up with Tita Cory
(Aquino), who I think is now involved in micro-financing and small enterprise devt, to be able to run a similar program for Filipinos!

Please do some kodakan and send us your pictures, so we can have a glimpse of the places you're visiting. At least know, we know that there are places such as Jericho and Montenegro. (Kilala ko si
Jericho Rosales and Mario Montenegro).

Take care.

Hi Toti,

Heto am in Mozartsland in Vienna. Pagdating mo pa lang dito tumutunog na yong mga rhapsodies and Viennese waltzes...and ganda. I am here for only five hours and will have two meetings at the airport...and then am off to Podgorica....I am so excited to go there because they really have paid too much just to bring me there. Grabe! Anyway,am really so excited...building an Ombuds practice there would not be so easy but will try...

CEFE is in Manila since sometime kaya lang mahal. We even have CEFENet Philippines there where I served as one of the first BOT... Trustee pa rin pero am really more active sa labas and my colleagues there are looking after the Philippine markets...We are doing a lot of work on poverty, environment, energy, etc. Yes, we have worked with Tita Cory but when I brought this here, I worked with the DTI, kasama si GMA (she was still an Undersectary then) and Mai Jimenez. CEFE is now in 130 countries all over so I get to enjoy the perks once in a while. I help invent the course with the German Government and since then GTZ has been known for this product called CEFE. Ok lang... alam mo naman ako...hanggang invento lang! The German NGO, CEFE International now owns the rights and we are still actively propagating the process and methodology. Marami pa akong ginangawa nagyon...ngayon pang malapit na akong tumigil.... Paradox, di ba? Hugssss to all our classmates.... from the wonderful and rhapsodic Vienna.

Hi Ed,

Wow! I would have loved to sit in one of your lectures kahit hindi ako enterpreneur. I am so proud of you! A real international figure.

With all the travels you make, are you ever jet-lag? Eto ako just in one place but hilong-hilo na ako sa traveling mo!

Hope your giving yourself some time to relax and sleep. Take care and more power to you.

Hi Ed,

Very proud of you man! Both you and Toti are amazing. Abbreviated words like CEFE, GTZ, TOT - I'm just seeing it first time via your e-mail exchanges. And the places you're visiting- Podgorica, where in the world is this? I know it's in Europe because that's where you are now. Anyway, just stay safe
always in your travel. Don't forget to Skype me when you are in a place where you can show me the attractions that I'm most interested of all. You
know what I'm referring to, right?
