PASS THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH BILL NOW!

Note to the readers: This is not the collective stand of DPS Class 67 members, but of the blog administrator. Those who have opposing views are welcome to express their position.

The following is a re-print of the full-page ad published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer last Saturday, July 26, 2008 by individuals and groups that are supporting the Reproductive Health Bill.

PROTECT LIFE. UPHOLD THE DIGNITY OF FAMILIES.

We are alarmed at how the facts on the Reproductive Health bill have been twisted by ultra-conservative members of the Roman Catholic hierarchy and its allied groups.

We are disturbed that the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines have themselves become guilty of unduly influencing the politicians and making a mockery of the highest office of the land - the Presidency. The past weeks and up until now, the public continues to witness the Roman Catholic hierarchy's vilification of the RH bill, the menacing warnings targeted at pro-RH legislators, and unduly "influencing" the Presidency to toe its line.

We are extremely troubled that the Roman Catholic hierarchy has become deaf and blind to the pleas of ordinary people, especially the women, Catholics and otherwise.

We would like the debate on RH to center on the FACTS: on what the bill actually says, the difficulties faced by most Filipinos everday, and the responsibility of government to address people's needs.

Reproductive Health saves lives.

Ten (10) Filipino women die daily due to pregnancy and childbirth-related causes. Three (3) out of four (4) of these women who die are aged 20-39 years. The big majority of those who die are poor women in the prime of their life.

RH aims to save the lives of women by enabling them to prevent unwanted and mistimed pregnancies, and by giving couples and individuals options. RH ensures that each pregnancy is safe through the needed pre- and post-natal care for women.

The tragic consequences of not having comprehensive RH services available to women, including accurate information on modern methods of contraception, are appalling: 1.4 million unplanned pregnancies each year if these women remain unprotected; 465,000 induced abortions from the unplanned pregnancies; and 800 maternal deaths due to induced abortion.

RH is a pro-life choice, in the truest sense of preventing deaths and suffering.

Reproductive Health addresses the needs and wants of Filipino families.

Studies show that large families tend to be poorer and find it more difficult to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty. Surveys also show that 9 in 10 Filipinos want to be able to control their fertility or plan their families. However, very young girls are becoming mothers. By age 19, one in five women already has a child.

Because of the Roman Catholic hierarchy's threats to pro-RH legislators and this administration's continuing subservience to the Roman Catholic Church, families are denied the services they need to be informed and to be able to achieve their desired family size. By this, the Roman Catholic hierarchy and the administration are, in effect, contributing to the perpetuation of poverty among families in this country.

Therefore, we call on:
* Our LEGISLATORS not to give up and to continue to work for the passage of a rights-based and comprehensive national RH policy;

* The CATHOLIC LAI to claim their right to informed choice by correcting disinformation against the RH bill and support its champions in Congress; and

* President GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO and other political leaders to uphold the Constitutional separation of Church and State to prevent the undue infuence of the Roman Catholic hierarchy on the Presidency and on public policymaking.

LIVES ARE AT STAKE. LET US ALL PROTECT LIFE.
PASS THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH BILL NOW!

Blood Clots/Strokes

This is another health advisory from Danny.
Welcome back Danny. Glad to hear from you after quite a long period of silence.

THEY NOW HAVE A FOURTH INDICATOR - THE TONGUE

I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!

STROKE:

Remember
The 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.
My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to
post it and spread the word. I agree.

If everyone can remember something this simple,
we could save some folks. Seriously.

Please read:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little
fall - she assured everyone that she was fine
(they offered to call paramedics).... she said she
had just tripped over a brick because of her new
shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate
of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up,
Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of
the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling
everyone that his wife had been taken to the
hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She
had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known
how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps
Ingrid would be with us to day. Some don't die....
they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition
instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke
victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the
effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was
getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then
getting the patient medically cared for within 3
hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3'
steps, STR. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to
identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness
spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer
severe brain damage when people nearby fail to
recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors
say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking
three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
(Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these
tasks, call 999/911 immediately and describe the
symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke ---

Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the
person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked',
if it goes to one side or the other, that
is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this
e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at
least one life will be saved.

Weight Loss Tips

Beep, beep! (yan ha, nag-beep, beep ako!)

Have you been trying to lose body fat, but find it comes off at a snail's pace?
Tired of losing a pound a month as you exercise and diet your brains out? If you’re working out with efficiency and maintaining a slight caloric deficit, you can actually lose up to 1.5 pounds per week. Here's some metabolism-boosting tips that should help ignite some good, steady fat loss.

1. Increase your meal frequency. Eat more often, but don’t increase your total calories. For example, if you eat three times per day, break those three meals into five to six smaller meals and eat every three hours. Food can actually help burn body fat when it’s used strategically. If you break your meals into smaller feedings it helps to control blood sugar -- and puts you in a better position to lose fat.

2. Break up your workout. With family responsibilities, work, financial pressures, etc., the thought of exercise is an extra stress for many people. However, research has proven that two short bouts of exercise per day will actually stimulate the metabolism more than one longer bout. Go for a brisk 15-minute walk first thing in the morning before work and then another one at lunch time. Do this five days per week and I know you’ll see progress at the end of 30 days.

3. Eat breakfast. I always stress to my clients to think of the body from the inside-out. The human body’s main goal is survival. If it senses any type of emergency, it will do everything in its power to keep you alive. If you sleep through the night and then deprive the body of food in the morning, what do you think the body is sensing at this point? It senses a potential famine and then holds onto stored body fat to keep you alive. Remember, calories from food represent heat. Use the heat to rev your metabolism.

4. Cycle calories. This is a technique I’ve used on several clients with amazing success. For three days, consume your minimum calorie requirement based on your height, weight and goals. Then, on day number four, increase your calories by an additional 400 (nutritious foods only). For example, if you're losing fat by consuming 1,200 calories per day, simply raise your calories to 1,600 on day number four. This technique can actually get the metabolism racing and stimulate additional fat loss. Just remember that the additional calories come from good sources of protein, carbohydrates and fats -- not pizza.

5. Drinks lots of water. Muscles and other tissues are made up of approximately 80-percent water. If you limit your water intake, the body will retain water and make you feel like the "queen or king of bloat." It doesn’t take much for this to happen -- the body only needs to be dehydrated by approximately 2 percent for this to take place. Drink 0.55 multiplied by your body weight in ounces of water per day. Staying hydrated will release some excess water trapped in the body and most likely reduce your weight by a few pounds.

6. Exercise in the morning. If you can fit it into your schedule, exercise in the morning. People who exercise consistently in the morning find that exercise at this time regulates their appetite all day long. They don’t get as hungry and they start the day with a boost to the metabolism.

7. Perform cardio interval training. Cardio interval training is simply short bursts of high-intensity exercise combined with more moderate intensity within the same workout. Studies have shown that people who perform interval training twice a week (in addition to two other days of lower intensity cardio) lose twice as much weight as those who do just a moderate cardio workout. You can easily incorporate interval training into your workout by inserting a 45-second burst into your stationary bike workout every four to five minutes. Your body will be working harder and will be forced to burn more calories.

8. Boost your metabolism by reading instead of watching TV. Researchers at Memphis State University monitored 32 girls as they watched a half-hour television program. They found the metabolic rates dropped as much as 16-percent below resting metabolic rate. In other words, they burned fewer calories watching TV than they did just by reading!

9. Drink green tea. Green tea has numerous health benefits, including weight loss. It appears to increase the amount of calories the body burns -- not necessarily because of the small amounts of caffeine it contains, but due to a compound abbreviated as EGCG. When purchasing green tea make sure the label states that the green tea used is standardized for caffeine and EGCG.

10. Practice hydrotherapy. First thing in the morning, drink 32 ounces of very cold water on an empty stomach. Don’t eat breakfast for at least 30 minutes. The cold water will force your body to raise its core temperature, thereby stimulating your metabolism and excreting any excess water. You may find that you lose two pounds the first month you try this. If you want to take it a step further, do the same thing at lunch.

Try several of these easy-to-use tips and start getting your fat burning metabolism revved.

Hilot/Massage

Keep Walking.....

The Organs of your body have their sensory touches at the bottom of your foot, if you massage these points you will find relief from aches and pains as you can see the heart is on the left foot.

Typically they are shown as points and arrows to show which organ it connects to.

It is indeed correct since the nerves connected to these organs terminate here.

This is covered in great details in Acupressure studies or textbooks.

God created our body so well that he thought of even this. He made us walk so that we will always be pressing these pressure points and thus keeping these organs activated at all times.
-----------------------

But if you're really too tired to walk, and you want to have a good massage, at least it's still not as expensive to have one here in the Philippines.

And one of the benefits of having children (or nephews, nieces, and apos), pwede kang magpahilot!

What about the palm?

If you want to do it yourself, here's a guide.

Cancer Cells

Here are some information about Cancer.

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show
up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When
doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their
bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the
cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's
lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be
destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental,
food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and
including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and
also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow,
gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver,
kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and
damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce
tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not
result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and
radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed,
hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and
complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and
become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer
cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding
it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important
food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,
Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural
substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts.
Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk
and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is
acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef
or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones
and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains,
seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline
environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans.
Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed
and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance
growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy
cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean
sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are
destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.
Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties.
Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and
heavy metal s in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

f. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes.
Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads
to more toxic buildup.

g. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining
from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein
walls of cancer cells and al lows the body's killer cells to destroy the
cancer cells.

h. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac,
anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own
killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E
are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

i. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and
positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger,
unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic
environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to
relax and enjoy life.

j. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment.
Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen
down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means
employed to destroy cancer cells.

Health Alert: Heart Attacks

I got this from my mailbox and thought it would be good to share with you, especially since at our age, we really have to take extra care of our health. Drinking cold water is already a habit, I didn't know that it's bad. I haven't tried drinking warm water, instead. I don't know if this and the other information in this article are medically proven and I hope that our classmates in health-related occupations like Fechie and Marybeth, (Dra. Yoly and Dra. Linda, do not access our blog) can confirm these.

Heart Attacks And Drinking Warm Water

This is a very good article. Not only about the warm water after your meal, but about Heart Attacks . The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

Common Symptoms Of Heart Attack...
A serious note about heart attacks - You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting . Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line . You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive. A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this message sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this & Send to a friend. It could save a life. So, please be a true friend and send this article to all your friends you care about. (There are no medical experts cited, so we can not really say that these info are medically proven).

HOW I QUIT SMOKING

HOW I QUIT SMOKING

Last March 31, I celebrated the 5th year anniversary of my decision to quit smoking. That was after 29 years of happily burning my money and poisoning my lungs.

I used to tell the non-smokers who were constantly harping about the dangers of inhaling second hand smoke, that “If they had the right to live, then we, smokers, also had the right to die.” I also believed then in the saying that “Smokers don’t grow old….. They die young.” That was why I thought I’d live only up to 50, hence my email address.

I started smoking late. I was 22 and already working for about a year in Manila when I discovered the joys of smoking(?). Initially, I accepted offers of a stick or two when drinking during nights out with my officemates. This was also the time I started to drink beer. (My limit before was one bottle. As soon as I get to my second, I ended throwing up.) So, I learned to smoke and drink to be “in” and be a part of the social group I was in. Nicotene is addicting. Slowly, I began to like the taste of menthol cigarettes.

From the occasional free puffs, I started buying a few sticks (pa-tingi-tingi). Then, I began buying by the pack (20 sticks per pack), and much later I graduated into buying by the ream (10 packs per ream). When I quit in March 2003, I was already smoking 3 packs a day. If I slept six hours a day, that would mean I smoked 3 and 1/3 sticks per hour. I preferred menthol cigarettes – I started with Philip Morris, then later, I shifted to Hope, when the price of Philip became too expensive.

I couldn’t work without the cigarettes. If I had to stay up late working and I ran out of cigarettes, I would go out and look for a convenience store. I really thought my mind wouldn’t work if I couldn’t smoke. Davao City was a place I hated most before because of its strict enforcement of the smoking ban in public places. Takot lahat kay Mayor Duterte.

There were two brief periods when I was able to quit smoking. First was in 1980 when I studied at UP Diliman. I decided to lead a healthy lifestyle. I stayed at Ipil Dorm and every afternoon I jogged around the campus for an hour. It really felt good until the eve of the Comprehensive Exam. I was tense and felt I didn’t have enough time to read my notes. I bought a pack of cigarettes but promised myself that I’d smoke only that night and that I’d throw whatever was left after the exam. Of course that didn’t happen. Instead, I went back to my old ways.

The second was in 1987, when I was in-between jobs. The research office I was working with (Association of Catholic Universities of the Philippines) closed and while looking for another job, I enrolled in a gym. Hingal kabayo ako. I couldn’t complete the routine the first time I tried. So, I quit smoking and felt really good. But then, I got a job at the SGV Economics and Marketing Group and soon, I was back to my old self, smoking, heavily. We could still smoke in our work station way back then.

There was a time in the early 90s when my smoker’s cough wouldn’t go away. I also felt some chest pains. So I went to the Philippine Heart Center for a check up. Luckily (or so I thought) the doctor who examined me was a smoker. But he said he felt like he was still in High School because he had to hide while smoking. Doctors at the Heart Center were not supposed to be seen smoking. So, he did not advise me to quit but to just moderate my greed (for cigarettes). (konsentidor!) Of course, that didn’t happen. So I went my merry way smoking, more so when I was working. My work station was a smoking area. It was more like a gas chamber.

I was still a heavy smoker when I climbed Mt. Mayon in 1995. Ang yabang ko pa, I was smoking when we started the gradual ascent. But I ended up practically crawling. I had the same experience when I joined my staff in documenting government- owned lands in the mountains of Pasacao in Camarines Sur. Hingal kabayo ulit.

Then the SARS scare came in 2002, 2003. People became paranoid, Just a slight cough and you’ll get dagger looks, well, not really…. not angry look but fear! Afraid that you had SARS and they’d be contaminated. That was what I wanted to avoid. I was facilitating a workshop and I had this cough. So I decided that I won’t smoke during the duration of the workshop (two days). I also drank lukewarm water to clear any irritation on my throat. Fortunately, I succeeded! I didn’t have fits of coughing while doing facilitation work. When the activity ended, I thought that if I was able to do it for two days, and I was able to work and it felt good, then I might as well stop smoking for good.

On the night of March 31, 2003, I made the decision to quit. I put a scotch tape on my cigarette case which contained the unfinished pack of cigarettes. I still keep this until now. I had some withdrawal symptoms. For more than a month, I had coughs. I had to take expectorant to be able to expel the nicotine from my lungs. I also experienced some shortness of breath and yawning gave such a relief. It, however, seemed like I was always sleepy. Other than these initial inconveniences, I felt alright. I gained appetite, and gained weight (ibang issue yata iyong paglaki ng tiyan). I never felt any urge to go back to smoking. Even when I’m in front of smokers while drinking, I’m not tempted to take even a few puffs. I have long surpassed the 3 months and 7 months that I previously quit.

Now, it’s been five years. Once you’ve made a firm decision to quit, the rest would be easy. Those who are having difficulty quitting haven’t really made up their mind.

Camote: Cure for Dengue

This article sent to us by Bert Padrigon is very interesting. Let's hope the doctors will confirm this because this will help the victims of dengue survive, especially the poor who can hardly afford the cost of hospitalization.

Send nyo sa iba baka makatulong din..

THERE is hope that the dengue scourge will be obliterated.

I was in a meeting in Manila recently with other Napolcom officials. While waiting for my flight back to Cebu, I happened to talk with friends. The conversation eventually turned to dengue. Some of their statements shocked me. I called up the persons concerned and they confirmed these revelations.

Computer technician Wenceslao Salesale Jr., 27, was downed by dengue. His platelet count plunged from 180 to 80. He was rushed by ambulance from Novaliches to Manila. Inside the ambulance, a relative, acting upon the advice of a missionary priest, made him drink soup made from camote tops. The following day, his platelet count was normal.

Dengue attacked the 7-year-old daughter of engineers Mar and Lita Budlongan of Kaloocan City. Her platelet count read 80. The same treatment was used. The following day she was back to normal.

The 15-year-old daughter of businessman Nepomuceno Salaga of Sampaloc, Manila had a dangerous platelet count of 80 due to dengue. The same treatment was followed. The following day she was back in school.

I asked a doctor of medicine about herbal cures and he said that many, if not most, medicines come from plants. He also said that under the Hippocratic Oath, doctors are bound encourage anything that can cure a patient.

Research

We need not do research deep in the rainforests of the Amazon or venture into the ocean depths in search of the elusive cure for dengue. It is right there in the backyard.

The following information is from Wikipedia:

In 1992, the Center for Science in the Public Interest compared the nutritional value of sweet potatoes to other vegetables. Considering fiber content, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium, the sweet potato ranked highest in nutritional value. According to these criteria, sweet potatoes earned 184 points, 100 points over the next
on the list, the common potato (NCSPC).

Sweet potato tops are excellent sources of antioxidative compounds, mainly polyphenolics, which may protect the human body from oxidative stress that is associated with many diseases including cancer ad cardiovascular diseases. Sweet potato greens have the highest content of total polyphenolics among other commercial vegetables studied.

Sweet potatoes contain protein, dietary fiber, lipid, and essential minerals and nutrients such as calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfur, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, aluminum and boron. Sweet potatoes are also important sources of vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and ascorbic acid.

Camote

In the case of Salaga, he bought five sheaves (bugkos/ bigkis) of camote cuttings. Each sheaf consists of about 12 cuttings. Each cutting measures about one foot. A sheaf costs about P5.

Camote tops are boiled in water to extract the juice. The boiling lasts for about five minutes. A little salt is used to give flavor to it. The patient is made to drink slowly and gradually. The body's immune system is thus revived, making dengue helpless against the body's natural defenses. Camote enables the body to heal itself.

Now you know why I earlier said that my friends' revelations shocked me.

They were shocking because people are needlessly dying all around us from dengue, while their very cure is also all around us.

In the past, many were fond of using the derogatory statement, "Go home and plant camote." Now, camote is big news. It can save lives. What could be bigger than that?

So, to fortify your family against dengue, "Go home and plant camote!"

(Engr. Lita Budiongan and Mr. Nepomuceno Salaga personally related to me their experiences with their respective daughters. I asked their permission to use their names.)

Where Dengue Breeds

This is another article shared by Bert.

[published in CONSUMERLINE
By Ching M.Alano.
Philippine Star, 15 Jan. 2008]

Many a grim tale has been told about the dreaded dengue. Here's another one, as shared in an e-mail:

Dear Consumerline,

This evening, we attended the wake of Natalie Corrales Feist, only 17 years old. Her mother Rosa is the sister of Pilita Corrales and her father Ed Feist is the head of a big pharmaceutical company in Manila.

Natalie was studying in Australia and had come home to Manila to spend the Christmas holidays with her family. What started only as a stomachache progressed to malaise and fever that turned out to be the deadly dengue fever which snuffed out Natalie's life in such a short time. Natalie was an only daughter and the youngest of three children. It was indeed so sad to witness the grief, the sadness, and the pain of losing such a wonderful daughter and so pretty at that.

The priest saying Mass also mentioned about another young girl of 15 who also died recently. A couple of years ago, my nephew who was only 28 years old and was to be married, also died within a short time after he contracted dengue. He was an only son.

Dengue kills. Let us not wait for it to get out of hand and claim moreyoung lives. As my own small contribution to help increase people's consciousness of this disease, allow me to share the warnings below.

Many people are not aware that in their own homes, there are dangerous places where mosquitoes breed.

Please take note: * The bromeliad plant has beautiful flowers, but they are deadly, because in between are pockets that collect clean water, which is where the dengue mosquitoes breed. If you have them, get rid of them or place them in pots so that after watering them, the pots can be turned over to remove the excess water.

I have noticed that along Ayala Avenue in Makati and other roadsides, the bromeliads, which are very colorful, are often used by landscapers to brighten areas, etc.

The landscapers must be discouraged from using these plants, especiallywhen they are planted in the ground, because they can cause an epidemic, as what happened in Cebu many years back. It was discovered that these plants were the culprits.

* Those that have bamboo fences placed over their concrete fences (as in many subdivisions) must see to it that the top is covered, because the bamboo crevices hold water and again become breeding places for dengue mosquitoes.

* I have just read on the Internet about a tip that was given at a recent gardening forum. Here it is: Put some water in a white dinner plate (I suppose a small white platito will do) and add a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Dish Washing Liquid. Set the dish on your porch, patio, picnic table, park bench, or other outdoor areas. I'm not sure what attracts them - the lemon's smell, the white plate color, or what. But mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh Dish Washing Liquid and water mixture and usually, within about 10 feet of the plate.

Try it, it works just super! It may seem trivial, but it may also help control mosquitoes around your home (especially in areas where the dengue-and malaria-carrying mosquitoes have reached epidemic proportions) . It's safer than mosquito coils .... no offensive odor and harmful fumes, no risk of fire.

This is all I can say, which may be helpful in controlling the rise of the deadly dengue mosquitoes. Let us all try to do our part in our own homes and surroundings, so that by doing so, we can lessen dengue's breeding places and save more lives.

Beware of Drinking from Softdrink Cans

DPS CLASS 67: Health Tips

A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke, which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday. The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis. Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned. A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than pub lic toilets (i.e.) full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident. Please forward this message to all the people you care about. (I JUST DID!!)

Health Tips

Apr 5
Guys,

This may come in handy. Our very own Rory, a survivor of four(4) strokes can corroborate this.

A Needle Can Save LIFE of a STROKE PATIENT!!!?? ?

First Aid for Stroke.
Keep a syringe or needle in your home to do this... It's amazing and an unconventional way of recovering from stroke, read it through. It can help somebody one day. This is amazing, if it works. Please keep this very handy... Excellent tips. Do take a minute to read this. You'll never know. One's life may depend on you.
My father was paralyzed and later died from the result of a stroke. I wish I knew about this first aid before.
When a stroke strikes, the capillaries in the brain will burst gradually. When a stroke occurs, stay calm. No matter where the victim is, do not move him/her. If the victim is moved, the capillaries in the brain will burst. Help the victim to sit up where he is to prevent him from falling over again, and then the bloodletting can begin. If you have in your home an injection syringe that would be the best, otherwise, a sewing needle or a straight pin will do. Place the needle/pin over fire to sterilize it, and then use it to prick the tip of all 10 fingers. There are no specific acupuncture points, just prick about one mm from the fingernail. Prick till blood comes out. If blood does not start to drip, then squeeze with your fingers. When all 10 fingernails is bleeding, wait for a few minutes until the victim regain consciousness. If the victim's mouth is crooked, then pull on his ears until they are red. Then prick each ear lobe twice until two drops of blood comes from each ear lobe. After a few minutes, the victim should regain consciousness. Wait until the victi! m regains his normal state. If he does not show any abnormal symptoms, take him to the hospital. Otherwise, if he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, the bumpy trip to the hospital could cause all the capillaries in his brain to burst.
I learned about bloodletting to save life from Chinese traditional doctor Ha Bu-Ting who lives in Sun-Juke. Furthermore, I had practical experience with it. Therefore I can say this method is 100% effective. In 1979, I was teaching in Fung-Gaap College in Tai-Chung. One afternoon I was teaching class when another teacher came running to my class room and said in panting, "Mr. Liu, come quick, our supervisor has had a stroke!." I immediately went to the 3rd floor. When I saw our supervisor, Mr.Chen Fu-Tien, his color was off, his speech was slurred, his mouth was crooked-all the symptoms of a stroke. I immediately asked one of the practicum students to go to the pharmacy outside the school to buy a syringe, which I used to prick Mr. Chen's 10 fingers tips. When all 10 fingers were bleeding (each with a pea-sized drop of blood), after a few minutes, Mr. Chen's face regained its color and his eyes' spirit returned, too. But his mouth was still crooked. So I pulled on his ears to fill them with blood. When his ears became red, I pricked his right earlobe twice to let out 2 drops of blood. When both earlobes had two drops of blood each, a miracle happened. Within 3-5 minutes, the shape of his mouth returned to normal and his speech became clear. We let him rest for a while and have a cup of hot tea, then we helped him go down the stairs, drove him to Wei-Wah Hospital. He rested one night and was released the next day to return to school to teach. Everything worked normally. There were no ill after-effects. On the other hand, the usual stroke victim usually suffers irreparable bursting of the brain capillaries on the way to the hospital. As a result, these victims never recover. If he survived the stroke, chances are, the damaged capillaries in the brain could cause him disabilities and he would remain paralyzed for the rest of his life. Therefore, stroke is the second cause of death. It is such a horrible thing to happen to anybody. If we can all remember this bloodletting method and start the life-saving process immediately, we may save the victim. The victim will be revived from the stroke. We may also save him from paralysis and he may regain 100% normality. We hope you can tell others about this first aid method. Someday, stroke may be removed from the list of major causes of death.
